This was a dream project to transform an old kitchen garden next to an Elizabethan Long Barn set in idyllic Kent countryside.
The shape of the plot was determined by the old brick walls and an existing raised terrace. We realigned parts of the brickwork, re-laid brick paths and added a seating area by the terrace. The centre of the garden was laid out as a formal parterre along the lines of a traditional Elizabethan design. The pathways were shingled and box hedging was planted to create beds for a variety of seasonal planting.
Impact came when we installed a number of planched hornbeams, aligned and linked to form a high hedge. This dramatic feature both defines and enhances the views of the fields beyond.
Espaliered fruit trees along the original walls add to the timeless feel of this beautiful old garden, so that it looks as if it has been there for centuries…
