As can often be the case with new builds, the clients’ garden was not much more than a few paving slabs over rubble-filled soil. To add to their problems, the ground had a notable slope, dropping away from the house and there was little space for storage.
We decided to make the most of the slope and by digging out the lower area created a sunken terrace which maximises privacy from the surrounding houses. We used tonal bricks to make a link to the house and oak sleepers provided a contrast in a feature retaining wall. It’s now a relaxing area for sitting quietly or entertaining.
One of the clients’ requests was keeping their wheelie bins out of sight in a small garden – something we’re often asked. We created a level area screened by trellis and climbing plants which allows easy access to move the bins when necessary.
The new garden is much more useable now and provides the clients with private areas in which to enjoy their outside space.
